The
Womens Guide to the Wired World
Feminist
Press 1997
This handbook
by activist Shana Penn is an excellent resource for new users and
experienced Web-surfers alike. It covers the basics of electronic
communications, highlighting uses for women activists of all kinds.
The glossary of terms in the back of the book is especially helpful
for making sense of the many highways and byways of the Internet
from "archie" to "POP" to "zipfile".
Research
and organizing are great promises of the Internet yet many
people have experienced more frustration than fruitfulness on the
Web. This handbook makes Internet research much easier by offering
pointers on the Web and other information transfer options on the
Internet (FTP, Telnet, etc.). First, it explains the basics of navigating
in cyber-space, and then it offers a slew of starting points for
research, categorized by subject. By providing e-mail addresses,
web sites, mailing addresses, and descriptions of organizations,
author Shana Penn invites women to log on, read about, and hook
up with one another.
