"Relationship
violence is preventable."
"Relationship
violence is when a person repeatedly threatens to or actually inflicts
physical, sexual or verbal injury on their boyfriend or girlfriend."
Nine sturdy
cards packed with information on recognizing and eliminating teen
relationship violence are tucked into this compact 4 x 6 inch action
kit designed by the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women
(LACAAW). Arranged in a tiered display, each card addresses an aspect
of teen dating violence. The "Check Yourself " card contains quizzes
to help teens decide if they are either perpetrating or being threatened
with abuse in their current relationship, along with actions steps
to take to end the violence. The "Reality Check" card contrasts
myths about dating violence and counterbalancing facts and statistics.
The "What You Can Do" card includes a safety planning checklist
and a set of tips for teens on how to help someone they suspect
is being abused. Other cards spell out steps young people can take
in resolving conflicts and creating healthy relationships. A set
of crisis and hotline numbers are printed on a small wallet size
card. The kit also includes information about the S.T.O.P. youth
program (Students Together Organizing Peace), a program designed
to educate teens, cultivate youth leadership, and mobilize young
people to organize violence prevention activities in their own schools,
and communities using theater, rallies, peer education and other
mobilizing tactics.
Recommended
for teens, youth advocates, parents and teachers working to help
young people develop healthy, non-abusive relationships.
