This curriculum
gives junior and senior high school teachers a rich set of materials
to help students recognize, respond to, and eliminate sexual harassment
and gender-based violence. Many of the guide's activities revolve
around extracting and analyzing themes related to relationship abuse
from classical and contemporary literary works and historical texts
that are typically included in reading lists for English literature,
social studies, health and psychology classes. Students are encouraged
to examine, discuss and write about issues related to personal boundaries,
relationship violence, acts of betrayal, and examples of friendship,
justice and courage. Exercises and activities range from role-plays
and case studies to ethnographic research, writing assignments and
mini-debates. Notes for teachers offer background readings and tips
for handling students' disclosures of abuse or harassment. Lessons
can be adapted flexibly to meet teachers' needs and priorities--either
condensed to one or two sessions or stretched out over the course
of several weeks.
Recommended
for teachers of junior and senior high school students (Grades 7-12)
who want to incorporate sections on gender bias and healthy relationships
in courses on literature, history, psychology and related academic
fields.
