"Breaking the
silence gives her a way out."
"Your silence
leaves the victim of domestic violence trapped in fear. Saying the
right thing at the right time can make all the difference."
Created and
distributed by WEAVE, a Sacramento-based domestic violence agency,
the Break the Silence on Domestic Violence action kit aims at involving
everyone in the community in domestic violence prevention efforts.
In addition to posters and resource lists, the packet includes a
description of nine safe, effective strategies community members
can take to help prevent domestic violence. Recommended strategies
range from asking clergy to speak out about domestic violence from
the pulpit to hanging domestic violence posters with referral numbers
in office and workplace settings. The kit offers helpful tips on
how friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers can talk
to someone they believe is being abused. It also encourages men
to take an active role in ending violence in their communities by
confronting other men's abusive treatment of women and by modeling
relationships based on equality and respect. The kit is available
in English and Spanish.
Recommended
for community organizations, even those outside the Sacramento area,
as an example of a kit calling for broad public participation in
local efforts to end domestic violence.
