A project of the Humboldt State University Department of Theatre, Film and Dance, this video presents highlights of the battered women's movement in California, along with commentary by leading advocates, trainers and legislators. The film captures some of the thinking underlying the historical shift in emphasis that took place in California in 1994 following the O.J. Simpson trial -a shift away from an exclusive focus on emergency shelter services for victims to an expanded focus on prevention. Key figures in the domestic violence movement, such as Allan Creighton, Nancy Lemon, Sharon Turner, Ken Nakamura, Sheila Kuehl and many others talk about how and why communities need to begin addressing the root causes of domestic violence. Commentators note that prevention involves changing not only the individual attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that lead to relationship violence, but also the institutional practices that allow violence to continue.
