Mission
of Transforming Communities:
Creating Safety and Justice for Women and Girls
(TC)
is a national leader in the creation of contemporary,
community-based approaches to preventing violence against women
and girls. By developing and implementing prevention campaigns
and by disseminating best practices through trainings and publications,
TC advances the prevention agenda, particularly within the domestic
violence field. Drawing from the experience of effective social
movements and the public health model of prevention, TC fosters
sustainable change by building community ownership, promoting
individual transformation, and fundamentally shifting the social
norms that condone or support violence against women.
As a learning
center for the development
and
application of interlocking strategies, TC seeks to change the
prevailing knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that support
violence against women and other forms of abuse as a social and
individual norm. While the vision of a "new reality" that motivates
the work of TC encompasses the eradication of all forms of oppression
(and in particular the full spectrum of gender-based violence),
our current strategic focus is on the violence women of all ages
experience within intimate relationships. This focus reflects
first of all the importance of domestic violence as a primary
cause of injury to women and a contributing factor to interpersonal
violence of all kinds, and secondly the importance of cross-fertilizing
the professional fields of domestic violence, violence prevention
and social change. Thus, the interventions, community campaigns,
training programs, and publications of Transforming Communities
specifically pilot, assess and promote strategies for domestic
violence prevention as related to broader community issues.
