Technical Assistance and Training
A project of the California Department of Health Services, Maternal and Child Health Branch,
Domestic Violence Section, Statewide Technical Assistance and Training Project.

The Department of Health Services, Maternal and Child Health Branch (MCH), Domestic Violence Section has recently funded a new group of contractors (along with their subcontractor partners) to provide technical assistance and training, in relation to specific component (or specialty) areas. TC-TAT received contracts to carry out two of the components -- Prevention and Media Advocacy. Together, the nine Statewide Technical Assistance and Training (STAT) projects will support MCH-funded agencies over the next three years. In the near future, you can find more in-depth coverage of the STAT projects and their available print and Internet resources on the SafeNetwork website, www.safenetwork.net.

Media Advocacy:
Transforming Communities: Technical Assistance and Training Project (TC-TAT) is pleased to have this opportunity to provide support, information, training, and technical assistance in media advocacy, for both direct service and prevention MCH grantees. TC-TAT will offer training in media advocacy during the intensive TC Institutes, as well as at regional "cluster" workshops and on-site technical assistance sessions.

Specific focus areas within media advocacy include planning a media campaign, speaking to the media, conducting focus groups, developing key media messages, and other skills to enable domestic violence groups to access the media and use it to shape social messages or advance specific policy objectives. Since in 1997, TC's Technical Assistance Program has worked with domestic violence organizations and allied agencies to promote effective strategies to create safety and justice in diverse communities. The Transforming Communities Training Curriculum builds on the successful strategies carried out in TC projects and incorporates research from the violence prevention and social movement fields.
