Multicultural Alliance Building

Multicultural Alliance Building is a beneficial tool to use when forming and working in culturally diverse endeavors. This publication examines the benefits and the difficulties of creating multicultural partnerships. It also provides practical steps designed to assist in the creation of effective alliances.

The publication covers a number of topics. First, it discusses the need for multicultural alliances and addresses the choices groups must work through when building a cross-cultural or multicultural alliance. Next, it brings to light possible pitfalls and explains how to avoid them. It then presents two compelling case studies of the Communities of Color Program, based in Sacramento and Los Angeles, and the Queer Asian Womens Project, based in San Francisco, which are both organizations that work with diverse communities. The case studies examine the history, challenges, present work and future directions of these organizations. Multicultural Alliance Building also includes working definitions of terms useful in conversations about cultural diversity, action tips and practical steps to take when forming a multicultural alliance.

With the changing demographics of California and the rest of the country, this publication is certainly a necessary and important tool for those working to prevent violence against women and girls. Multicultural Alliance Building is available as a stand-alone publication, or as an insert to Transforming Communities' Organizing Kit, which lays out key steps for community prevention campaigns.
