Beyond Awareness to Action: Ending Abuse of Women

This 23 minute educational video is an outstanding tool for community outreach and an unusual one. This video stands out among domestic violence educational materials for its dramatization of community action against violence. It is an excellent resource for building a community's sense of responsibility to intervene in situations of domestic violence and to identify ways to prevent it. This video is also a powerful tool for recruiting community activists, and for expanding the focus from individual accountability toward community responsibility for the prevention of domestic violence.

The three scenarios discussed in this video are a foundation for facilitators to use in a group discussion.

The scenarios show

  1. Intervening when hearing violence at the neighbor's house,
  2. Intervening when a friend acts abusive toward his girlfriend and
  3. Intervening when a local business uses advertising or store displays that are violent toward women.

The themes in this video are community responsibility, holding men accountable for their violence and the necessity of individual and collective action.

The Facilitator's Discussion Guide will support the facilitator to lead the viewers in discussion. This 6-page guide is included with the video, and contains discussion questions, helpful statistics, and survey data that was used in designing the video.
