Developed and
pilot-tested extensively with groups of teenage males by staff of
the Oakland Men's Project (Oakland, California), the Young Men's
Work curriculum package gives youth group facilitators a carefully-crafted
set of teaching modules and exercises for challenging stereotypes
and belief systems that condone or contribute to men's violence.
Suitable for young men in the 14-19 age range, the complete package
includes a facilitator's guide, a set of student workbooks, a 27
minute video and three posters. Each component can be purchased
separately. Individual modules focus on ways that boys and men are
both rewarded and restricted by conforming to "act like a man" messages
and stereotypes. Exercises designed to help young men break out
of the "act like a man" box and develop more expressive and supportive
relationships with peers and partners are included.
Recommended
for facilitators of youth groups in a variety of settings, including
schools, athletic programs, juvenile detention settings, or substance
abuse treatment programs.
