A Woman's Place
This quiet, inspiring video documents the work of three powerful women's rights advocates in South Africa, the U.S. and India. In South Africa, a judge travels to rural villages to talk with tribal elders about a shocking new law that allows widows to inherit property in their own right, without having to rely on male relatives for shelter and protection. A lawyer in Duluth, Minnesota tries to change the court system so that batterers can be prosecuted even when their victims refuse to testify. In India, a lawyer offers classes for women on how to use the law to resist being shamed and evicted from their homes during a divorce. The stories of these three resourceful, determined women-literally profiles in courage-are perfect for viewing in domestic violence trainings or women's studies classes.
