"Your experience
counts!"
"You can help
others because of your experience. Think how your life would have
been different if someone had helped you."
Designed for
witnesses and survivors of domestic violence, the Person to Person
brochure offers guidelines and helpful hints on how to use one's
personal experience of abuse as a basis for reaching out to others
and raising public awareness. Personal stories and comments from
survivors and family members illustrate some of the ways in which
friends, neighbors and co-workers can make a difference in the lives
of women and children who are being abused. Specific action steps
that individuals can take as a friend, neighbor, or parent are interspersed
throughout the brochure. These include small but meaningful acts
such as inviting a friend you suspect is being abused to talk with
you about what's going on, placing safety cards in the employee
lounge or restroom at work, encouraging your child's teacher at
school to talk about domestic violence with their students in the
classroom. The kit includes a sample referral card and "There's
No Excuse for Domestic Violence" bumper sticker, along with a form
for ordering additional low-cost resource materials. Materials in
this kit are suitable for use in communities throughout the United
States.
Recommended
for adult survivors of domestic violence and for the friends and
family members who want to help others gather the strength to leave
an abusive relationship.
