It Is Your Business Community Action Kit
"Sometimes you need to get in other people's business."

"Taking a stand against domestic violence doesn't mean jumping into the middle of a fight. It means helping to create a community climate that refuses to tolerate abuse."

The It Is Your Business community action kit, developed in 1999 by the Family Violence Prevention Fund, in partnership with the National Institute on Domestic Violence in the African American Community, features text, tools, and resources designed for African American communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The action kit urges community members to heed the call of Ujima, the Kwanzaa principle that promotes taking responsibility for solving problems and strengthening communities. The goal is to transform domestic violence from a private matter to a community concern -- that is, everybody's business! The kit outlines action steps individuals can take to persuade neighbors, co-workers, and church members to join together in creating safety for women and to reach out to families affected by violence. It also describes the resource materials available to community members -- stickers for windows, signs and posters for businesses and public places, and a brochure addressed to African American men, "You have the power to stop domestic violence."

Recommended for individuals, church members and clergy, business leaders, and community organizers within the African American community.
