Domestic Violence: A National Curriculum For Children's Protective Services
...One of the best ways to keep children safe is to keep their mothers safe.

Published in 1996, this curriculum provides child protective services caseworkers basic training in the dynamics and dangers of domestic violence, as well as options for intervening in ways that protect both adult and child victims of abuse. Organized in six training modules, the manual offers detailed step-by-step instructions for guiding trainees through the process of assessing for spousal or partner abuse in cases of suspected child abuse and for designing interventions that are clinically appropriate and consistent with state welfare statutes. Lecture and discussion notes underscore the need to avoid penalizing abused women for their batterer's mistreatment of them and their children. Case study examples mirroring real-life dilemmas give trainees an opportunity to problem-solve about challenging situations. Nearly 100 pages of hand-outs and overheads make it easy for instructors to provide a thorough and intensive introduction to ways that domestic violence and child abuse overlap in families.

Recommended for social service staff, especially children's protective service staff, including supervisors, instructors, and trainees.
