Stop the Violence, Break the Silence
This two-part curriculum package brings together information and practical resources from domestic violence, sexual assault and disability rights fields. The training guide includes learning modules on disability awareness (types of disabilities, history of the disability rights movement, communication issues, etc.); the dynamics of relationship abuse and safety planning; and legal and programmatic issues (such as accessibility guidelines enacted under the Americans with Disabilities Act and requirements for reporting abuse of adults, etc.). The guide also includes a set of lesson plans for conducting a 15-session educational support group for abuse survivors with disabilities and simplified versions of domestic violence education materials for people with developmental disabilities and mental retardation. The accompanying resource kit contains handouts, overheads and ideas for group exercises and activities to go with each of the training guide modules. The set includes extensive bibliographies of reading materials and listings of disability resource organizations (such as agencies that develop materials in braille and audio tape formats).
