Including Women With Disabilities
New materials on disability awareness are included in the 2001 edition of the Domestic Violence Awareness Month information packet distributed by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence. The information packet, Domestic Violence Awareness: Tips, Tactics and Resources, is the NRC's "how-to manual" for conducting domestic violence outreach, media advocacy and awareness campaign events. The special section on including women with disabilities appears in chapter two (pages 17-24) under the heading "Including Diverse Communities." Disability materials include fact sheets with statistics on crimes against people with disabilities, an outline of key provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act pertaining to nonprofits, and a set of guidelines on communicating respectfully and appropriately with people with various types of disabilities. The fact sheets and guidelines can be distributed as a single packet or used as separate handouts in training sessions.
